Inside a Traditional Punjabi Wedding: Rituals, Colours and Emotions

Few celebrations are as vibrant, emotional and visually rich as a Punjabi wedding. Having filmed and photographed dozens of Sikh weddings across Malaysia and Singapore, we’ve learned that every ritual carries its own story — and its own visual language.

The Baraat

The groom’s procession, often accompanied by a dhol drummer and dancing family members, sets the tone for the entire day. It’s loud, joyful and full of movement — a moment built for cinematic wide shots and slow motion.

The Anand Karaj

The ceremony itself takes place around the Guru Granth Sahib, with the couple circling it four times during the Laavan. These moments are quiet, sacred and deeply emotional — very different in energy from the baraat, and they call for a more restrained, respectful approach to coverage.

The colours

Rich reds, golds, and increasingly, jewel-toned lehengas and turbans in shades of teal, mustard and blush give every Punjabi wedding a distinct visual identity. Lighting and colour grading in the edit matter enormously here, to keep these tones true to life rather than washed out.

The emotion between the formal moments

Some of our favourite frames aren’t from the ceremony at all — they’re the tearful hug between a bride and her father before the baraat, or aunties adjusting a groom’s turban minutes before he walks out.

Every Punjabi wedding we’ve covered has taught us something new about pacing a story — knowing when to be dramatic and cinematic, and when to simply stay quiet and let the moment speak for itself.
